World Sidecarcross Championship
Jinin, Czech Republic (Round 2)

Because of the unfortunate debacle involving ‘late entries’ from four federations, the number of riders entered for the Jinin GP was only 30, so none of them had to qualify. Saturday was a drawn out affair with just two free practice sessions and one final session against the clock to determine positions on the start line.

Fastest was Daniel Willemsen now reunited with his regular passenger Reto Grutter with Sergis / Stupelis 2nd and local stars Vaclav & Marek Rozehnal 3rd.

With the temperature in the low 20s under a virtually clear blue sky the gate dropped for race one and the charge up the hill to the first corner was under way. Leading the pack was Willemsen from Joris Hendrickx and Sergis. By the second corner Rozehnal was up to 4th and not far behind Sergis. By the end of the second lap Sergis was past Hendrickx but Willemsen was already nearly 10 seconds in front.

By the half way point Rozehnal took Hendrickx whilst at the front Sergis was unable to close the gap on Willemsen. With 10 minutes to go Rozehnal had to pull out with a broken rear wheel lifting Hendrickx up to 3rd ahead of Soederqvist. One lap later the Swede was out with a broken sidecar wheel spindle.

Willemsen went on to win by 21 seconds from Sergis with Hendrickx 3rd.

The second leg got under way with Willemsen just taking the holeshot from Sergis with Jan Hendrickx in 3rd. For the first couple of laps Willemsen and Sergis slowly pulled away from the following riders but the Dutchman could not break away from the Latvian. After 10 minutes Rozehnal started to close up on Hendrickx and Soederqvist who had started in 10th started to catch the Czech rider. In the 16th minute Rozehnal passed the Belgian and set off after Sergis who by now was over 10 seconds behind Willemsen. Then on lap 9 Sergis pulled up with a broken clutch gifting Rozehnal 2nd whilst behind him Soederqvist was closing the gap on Hendrickx. With just over 5 minutes left the big Swede passed the Belgian on a long downhill right hand bend to take third place.

Willemsen slowed down over the last two laps but still took the win from Rozehnal. He now leads the championship by 7 points from Jan Hendrickx with Sergis back in 6th nearly 40 points adrift.

The next round is Chernivtsi, Ukraine next weekend but with so many riders unable to ride in Jinin it is likely that their entry will be poor as well.
