WILSON’S THE WOR WARRIER!!
WOR Events’ last event of 2007 was run in those familiar winter conditions that consisted of sideways rain, hail stones, wind and, in between, Blue Sky!! No one cared though as the riders all seemed to enjoy the well-organised and carefully marked out 6 mile long enduro loop that the club had laid on.
A massive entry was booked in and the event was scheduled to run for 4 hours with classes for Iron man (solo) and 2 man teams. However with the weather being as severe as it was around the 2 hour mark the organisers decided that 3 hours was enough for the competitors to do battle. No one complained funnily enough!
The track in the dry would have been simply stunning but with the extreme weather it became just great fun, a testament to the planning of the WOR track team.
Rowland Morris and Lincoln Brewster were simply flying, Morris more so, setting the event’s fastest lap times with ease. These two were in a two man team that were the winners by a country mile. They finished on 12 laps and were just short of lapping (on real time) the second placed expert team of Andrew Noakley and Damien Butler.(11 laps) 3rd place expert 2-man was the duo of the Davies brothers Tudur and Rheinallt.
The only other rider to do 12 laps in the event was Justin Wilson on his Yam 250. Entered into the iron man class and riding steady for the duration saw the big chap from Accrington take the class win and the event’s second place overall behind Brewster and Morris. To be fair though Morris and Brewster were getting chance to have a breather and Wilson was toughing it out alone so the two results cannot be compared too much.
Second to Wilson in the Expert Iron man was David Myers with another solid performance in a WOR event, taking a 3 minute advantage from 3rd placed Harry Hillas. The Clubman team on the top spot of the podium was the youthful duo of Gary Daniels and Josh Taylor who took the class win by 2 minutes from Andy Daniels (Gary’s dad!) and Rob Loney. 3rd went to the hard charging Steve Hughes and Rob Lambert, although they were a lap down on the top two teams.
Clubman solo spoils went to Alun Jones (pictured right) in his last ride as a Clubman before moving up to Experts with WOR. Jones took an almost lap advantage from second placed Carl Critchlow who was 11 minutes ahead of 3rd placed Gar Lloyd. These top 3 were well ahead of the rest of the pack.
Kev Freeman had a good day taking the top spot in the sportsman solo class with 9 laps to his credit and a healthy 15 minute lead over 2nd placed George Knowles. Knowles, riding strong for the duration and fully deserving his award. 3rd sportsman solo was Edward Turner on 8 laps.
In the team sportsman class there was a real battle going on between the top two duos. In the end Alan Joyce and Mike Wood took a 1 and a half minute advantage from Ben Ball and Kenny Blane in second place. The Goldstraw brothers then took the final podium position.
The novice solo group was topped by Craig Hey after a race long battle with his mate Keith Jackson. Keith ended up second ahead of Chris Davies.
The premier Novice 2 man team of Stuart Middleton and Joe Frost were ahead of Oliver Coop and Tom Potter in the runner up position and Julian Lloyd and Simon Brenton in the bronze zone.
A new class was welcomed with open arms and really helped with the sprit of the event and team side of things; this was the Dad’s N Lad’s class. Well supported with over 40 riders in this group alone and some great racing to complement it, will ensure at the next WOR event that the class returns for the D n L’s. The Belfield’s, Kenny and his son Lewis took the win, from Colin Jones and his lad Ashley. The Jones’ finishing six minutes behind come the end of the race. Third went to the up and coming youngster Michael Briggs and his dad Tony. The older Briggs was knocking out some stylish wheelies along the forest roads to his credit.
In a very small Youth 2 man class the victory sherbet went to the awesome Humphries boys with a result that would have top 5 clubman’d for them. William Hillas and Gareth Davies rode well to secure the runners up trophies.
And so… the last event of the year for the “WOR” and what a great year it has been. Professional, High Profile, Safe, Well planned racing that has offered value for money and helped people hone their skills through all ranges of abilities and levels and ages. The standard that WOR have set is quite simply phenomenal and is the template that other clubs that want to grow and take the sport further need to use and indeed do so now.
The bad news is that the “normal” WOR calendar and events does not kick off again now until February 2008 but the VERY good news is that the awesome TOUGH ONE EXTREME SPRINT SCRAMBLE is on its way very soon indeed. 27 days to go!!! More details at www.worevents.com.
